Defence journalists discover the synthetic training reshaping naval readiness, at Metaverse VR.

Metaverse VR and Capita Selborne welcomed defence journalists to Portsdown Technology Park for an exclusive inside look and hands‑on demonstration of Metaverse VR’s virtual bridge simulators, synthetic training systems and wider defence training technology underpinning Royal Navy training modernisation.
The visit provided a detailed view of how simulation, synthetic environments and rapid capability development are reshaping naval readiness.
Beginning with an introduction from Toby Everitt, CEO and founder of Metaverse VR, and Ade Morley, Managing Director at Capita Selborne, the journalists were given a walkthrough of how synthetic training, spiral development and rapid procurement have enabled the Royal Navy to modernise bridge and navigation training at unprecedented speed.
Inside the Royal Navy’s Synthetic Training Ecosystem
Journalists took to the seas, with Metaverse showcasing its full virtual bridge, control room and engine room simulators, as well as UAS and Counter‑UAS training systems. These capabilities allow training to be delivered early, then iteratively improved through life, supporting the Navy’s shift toward more agile, data‑driven and synthetic training environments.
Journalists stepped inside the simulators, observed live demonstrations and spoke directly with the teams responsible for delivering and supporting the systems.
Joanna Bailey, editor of ADS Advance, said the experience helped contextualise the scale and realism of today’s naval training technology.
“I’m quite new to maritime defence, being an aviation girl myself, so I treated this very much as a learning opportunity and I learnt an awful lot.
“Our hosts were incredibly knowledgeable and answered all our questions brilliantly.
“And the hands-on demos, being able to actually see the technology in action, really does bring it to life for us in a way you simply don’t get from reading about it.”
Synthetic training as a core component of naval readiness
Throughout the day, Metaverse VR and Capita highlighted how synthetic training is becoming central to Royal Navy training and operational preparation.
The Warfighter Readiness paper calls for greater use of simulation, faster lesson integration from the frontline and more agile training delivery. These themes were reflected across the briefings and demonstrations.
Bailey noted the broader relevance across defence domains:
“Simulations are definitely the way forward, not just for naval operations but for aerospace and the drone economy as well.
“You can’t take huge pieces of equipment offline to let trainees experiment on them, so having them practise in a simulated environment makes far more sense.
“It means they’re ready to go to work the moment they step onto the real thing.”
SME innovation and the importance of support structures
The visit also touched on the pressures facing defence SMEs, particularly during periods of uncertainty around DIP and SDR timelines. Bailey reflected on the impact:
“We’ve seen a lot of good companies that aren’t there anymore because of delays, because of the way funding’s structured, and because of how difficult it is for SMEs to work with the MOD.
“Metaverse VR has clearly been well supported by Capita, and that bridging role between an innovator and the Ministry of Defence is incredibly important.”
Despite the challenges, she was clear about the strength of the UK’s innovation base:
“Frankly, the UK’s got bags of innovation. We’ve got great companies and great people, and we just need a bit more certainty and a bit more willingness to fund it properly.
“If SMEs can get the backing they need, they’ll continue delivering world class capability.”
A clearer understanding of synthetic training’s value
Before the visit, Bailey admitted she wasn’t sure what to expect but ultimately found it invaluable in opening her eyes to the benefits of synthetic training.
“Now I’ve come for the day, I’ll be telling all my colleagues. It’s been genuinely eye opening.”
And it was this outcome Everitt and Morley were hoping for. Speaking after the visit, Everitt said the value of bringing journalists into the environment is that it shows, rather than tells, what modern synthetic training can achieve.
“When people step inside these simulators and see how the systems work together, the conversation changes.
“You can talk about synthetic training, spiral development and rapid delivery, but nothing lands quite like seeing it in action.
“What we want is for people to understand how these capabilities support the Royal Navy today and how they will evolve through life.
“Days like this help build that understanding and show the importance of the Selborne ecosystem in enabling SMEs like ours to deliver at speed.”

5 Ways Mixed Reality Training Improves Military Readiness and Skill Retention

In June 2026, all of the UK’s five Astute class submarines were withdrawn from active duty to await routine maintenance, leaving Britain without an active attack-submarine force.
As a result, all five crews were grounded.
Aside from the obvious defence vulnerability, Cdr Ryan Ramsey, a former nuclear submarine captain, highlighted a broader issue not getting enough attention, saying “You could lose vital skill sets if you’re not operating at sea.”
Without an operational vessel, crews were left without an active environment to maintain basic judgement skills, procedural fluency or continue regular mission rehearsal and simulation-based training.
Like all high-performance professions, submarine operations are unforgiving. Skills fade quickly when they are not rehearsed in context, and traditional training tools cannot replicate the pressure, tempo or complexity of real missions.
This is exactly the type of challenge mixed reality is built to solve.
When platforms are offline, unavailable or in short supply, MR gives crews a way to stay sharp, practise realistically and retain the skills that matter most.
1: Immersive repetition improves long term skill retention
Inside high-fidelity mixed-reality environments, the brain encodes every second as a lived event rather than abstract information.
This matters because activities that feel experienced are stored more deeply and recalled more reliably under pressure.

Metaverse VR has today launched Envision AI, a state-of-the-art family of applied AI capabilities designed to enhance immersive and synthetic training environments.
Built on a shared, engine-agnostic and secure-by-design architecture developed over 18 months of R&D, Envision AI introduces two complementary virtual agent products: Envision AI Entities and Envision AI Instructors.
Envision AI Entities are AI-driven virtual training role players that operate inside the scenario itself. They perform tasks normally carried out by a human in the loop and can act as an air traffic or airspace controller, an adversary or a basic role player.
Entities interact through natural conversation and behave in line with approved doctrine and procedure, making them suitable for defence, aviation and emergency services training.
Envision AI Instructors are custom built, domain specific digital avatars that guide, coach and answer questions inside any VR training environment. They provide real time support, explain procedures and deliver expert, textbook aligned guidance at the point of need.
Together, Entities and Instructors can populate any scenario with believable, interactive participants. This removes the requirement to crew every supporting role with a person and allows training teams to scale instruction, automate routine roles and maintain high fidelity simulation even when resources are limited.
Both products can be reconfigured across roles and exhibit behaviour grounded in validated source material rather than hand scripted logic.
This ensures that a controller can issue correct clearances, an adversary can execute credible tactics, and a role player behaves consistently with operational expectations. The result is a more realistic, more reliable and more repeatable VR training system.

The Role
As part of the Developer Team, you will be responsible for the support and delivery of XR projects for the Defence and Private Sectors. The Role
The Software Engineer is a hands-on technical role supporting the implementation, integration, validation, and documentation of solutions across Defence, R&D and Public sector bid work, demonstrations, and delivery activities.
The role works closely with the Lead Software Engineer, XR and cross functional teams to convert technical concepts and architectures into working prototypes, reusable components, documented integrations and delivery-ready solutions. The role is intentionally a broad technical position, it includes applied AI integration, real-time application development, general software engineering, API integration, technical documentation, testing, and deployment support.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain prototypes, proof-of-concept systems, and technical demonstrators.
- Take early-stage feasibility prototypes forward into working implementations, validating technical assumptions and documenting findings.
- Implement integrations between AI services, APIs, backend systems, XR applications, simulation environments, and third-party platforms.
- Develop microservices, wrappers, connectors, and service interfaces to support solution components.
- Support applied AI development including LLM services, speech services, classification models, RAG pipelines, and AI-enabled application features.
- Support offline and local AI deployments, configuration and testing locally-hosted models.
- Prepare and maintain demo-ready technical builds for internal and customer-facing demonstrations.
- Support preparation of technical handoff to delivery teams, including setup guides, implementation notes, configuration instructions, and known-issue logs.
- Maintain reusable technical assets, templates, example projects, and internal tooling to improve consistency across all outputs.
- Support technical feasibility work for bids, grants, and customer opportunities, including building small proof-of-concept demonstrations to evidence technical claims.
- Test and validate solution components against defined requirements or acceptance criteria, recording issues, limitations, and dependencies clearly.
- Any additional tasks to ensure the success of the role and support to the business.
Specialist Knowledge and Specialist Skills
Essential:
- Degree in software engineering, computer science, AI, games technology, simulation, or a related technical discipline
- Practical software development experience in at least one relevant language, such as Python, C++ or C#
- Ability to build, test, and debug software, integrations, and small services independently.
- Understanding of APIs, data formats, and basic system integration concepts
- Ability to write clear technical documentation including setup guides, implementation notes, and integration summaries
- Willingness to work across different technical areas including AI, XR, backend services, tooling, and prototyping
- Strong problem-solving ability and willingness to learn in a fast-paced R&D environment
- Ability to communicate technical issues and blockers clearly to senior engineers, architects, and project teams
Desireable:
- Experience with AI/ML tools, LLMs, speech services, RAG systems, or AI APIs
- Experience working with VBS
- Experience with Unreal Engine, Unity, or other real-time 3D development environments
- Experience building and delivering synthetic products
- Familiarity with Docker, FastAPI, REST APIs, Git, and deployment workflows
- Experience with simulation, defence, XR, training systems, or serious games
- Familiarity with cloud services or local/offline model deployment
- Experience preparing demos, prototypes, or proof-of-concept systems for technical or customer audiences

In this blog post, we look at four training advantages of using immersive virtual reality simulation to deliver enhanced multi-user, multi-domain military training.

Mission rehearsal has always relied on simulation and synthetic training, but it has also been restricted by long-standing challenges of fixed facilities, single user systems and scenarios difficult to adapt or repeat.
For joint readiness, constraints like these limits how easily teams can train together, share a common operating environment or rehearse multi‑domain tasks in one coherent space.
Virtual reality changes that. Today, defence teams are integrating VR into existing training protocols and systems as part of the wider shift towards digitally enabled, synthetic training.

1. Consistent, Custom, Controllable Simulation Training
Immersive training systems, like virtual or mixed reality, are being used by armed forces instructors to create tailored environments to match precise training needs.
Multi-agency teams are dropped into digital twin replicas of towns, cities and operational terrain built to reflect real mission locations in which threat profiles, weather, visibility and comms conditions can be adjusted instantly.

3. Faster joint simulation training set up with lower overheads

Metaverse VR and Kongsberg Simulation unite to provide long-term training support to the Royal Navy

A new partnership agreed between Metaverse VR and Kongsberg Simulation will guarantee support for the Royal Navy’s Bridge Simulators until 2033.
The announcement extends a successful collaboration between the two companies and reinforces a shared commitment to delivering high fidelity, virtual reality maritime training solutions that underpin safe and effective Royal Navy operations.
Running from July 2026, the agreement ensures the Royal Navy will continue to benefit from stable, reliable and continuously supported synthetic training capability into the next decade.
Speaking on the announcement, James Reynolds MBE, Senior Project Manager at Metaverse VR, said:
“Working alongside Kongsberg Simulation to support the Royal Navy’s Bridge Simulators is something we value deeply.
“This new contract gives us the opportunity to continue delivering reliable, high fidelity and customised training environments that help crews prepare for real world operations.
“It also strengthens an already successful UK-Norwegian partnership built on trust, innovation and shared purpose. We look forward to supporting the Royal Navy through to 2033.”
This long-term commitment builds on work first announced in 2023, when a new suite of navigation simulators was commissioned as part of Project Selborne’s modernisation of Royal Navy training.
Delivered with Kongsberg Digital under contract to Capita, the simulators introduced a step change in realism and training capacity across the maritime training enterprise.
They enable Bridge Teams to rehearse everything from single unit pilotage to Replenishment at Sea and complex Task Group manoeuvres, day or night and in all weather conditions.
The modernised systems replaced trainers that had served the Royal Navy for more than 20 years, introducing advanced hydrodynamic vessel modelling, customised bridge configurations and immersive VR training for ship handling and RAS evolutions.
The partnership also represents another strong example of UK–Norwegian defence cooperation.
Both nations have a long history of collaboration in maritime security, and this agreement continues that tradition by bringing together complementary strengths in simulation technology, software development and training delivery.
By uniting proven Norwegian simulation capability with UK based innovation and support, the contract provides the Royal Navy with a resilient, future ready training solution.

“Feel what it’s like to fly”: Metaverse VR launches permanent demo space at WholeShip’s National Drone Hub

In a “significant milestone” for Metaverse VR, the immersive virtual reality training company will have a dedicated demonstration space at the UK’s best physical drone testing site.
Doors are now open to Metaverse VR’s new VirtualSky demonstration centre at the National Drone Hub in Cornwall.
In partnership with WholeShip, this new hub provides a dedicated space for Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) operators of all experiences – from seasoned pilots to curious members of the public – to try out the latest in virtual reality UAS training solutions.
Supported by Metaverse VR experts, visitors will use the same system trusted by the military to train their UAS operators and take the controls themselves in hyper-realistic mission simulations.
XR Team Leader at Metaverse VR, Liam Peachey, said “visitors will immerse themselves in the demonstration. They’ll put on a headset, pick up the controls, and experience what it feels like to fly. The software includes accurately recreated geographical locations, like Dubai old town, with real-to-life graphics.”
As an experienced 3D Artist with a degree in Computer Games Technology from the University of Portsmouth, Peachey oversees the design and build of the virtual reality technology, including ensuring the virtual drone reacts on screen just as it would in real life. He explained, “VirtualSky is designed to feel realistic but safe, so people can learn, practice, and build confidence without worrying about crashing a real drone”.
VirtualSky is one of Metaverse VR’s flagship products. It’s a cutting-edge virtual reality training platform which is both hyper-realistic and fully customisable.
Military personnel and drone operators use the software to learn handling skills and to practise flying in challenging conditions. The VirtualSky technology allows for immersive, strategic mission preparation, while being safe and cost-effective.
The launch of the dedicated demonstration space at the National Drone Hub makes the virtual reality technology accessible to everyone with an interest in drones. As well as qualified drone operators and drone enthusiasts across the UK, members of the public can book a demonstration with a Metaverse VR expert.
Peachey explains the ethos behind the Metaverse VR’s permanent demonstration space:
It’s a place where you can see the latest drone technology up close and try some of it for yourself. It’s a good chance for anyone interested in drones to learn, explore, and see where the industry is heading.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for experienced drone operators to develop their expertise. Having a permanent location for operators to visit means they have “easy access to a training tool where they can practise skills and test situations before flying in the real world.”
As well as showcasing Metaverse VR’s technology to a wider audience, the collaboration with WholeShip at The National Drone Hub marks a “significant milestone” for the virtual reality company.
Metaverse VR has been a regular highlight at drone events and conferences in recent years where they have presented their technology to attendees. This collaboration is the first time Metaverse VR has a permanent site for drone enthusiasts and experts to visit.
“Being at the National Drone Hub enables us to work closely with other businesses and demonstrate how virtual reality simulation can enhance drone training”, said Peachey.
“We’re committed to ensure VirtualSky is the most accurate, most effective drone training technology available. Through this collaboration, we can show VirtualSky to drone operators and use their feedback to help us keep improving it”.
Metaverse VR was launched in 2009 by CEO and Founder Toby Everitt, after a career of 24 years in both the Army and the Royal Navy as a pilot. The company uses virtual reality technology to create hyper-realistic, immersive training solutions for trainees who work in extreme environments.
WholeShip’s National Drone Hub is based in Predannack Airfield, Helston, Cornwall. It is run in partnership with the Royal Navy and was set up in December 2022. It combines facilities, expertise, and airspace for the development and testing of Beyond Visual Line Of Site (BVLOS) and Ship-Air Integration for drones.

How instructors use augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to make professional training more inclusive

There are many reasons trainees can struggle in a professional training space or in an educational environment. The best instructors use a toolkit of strategies to work with their trainees, to support them in their learning, and to guide them when they face barriers to learning.
Now, instructors have one of the most impactful and innovative new training strategies to add to their toolkit.
Augmented Reality (AR) training and Virtual Reality (VR) training have a proven record for being effective, accessible, and engaging for trainees.
In this blog, we speak to Dave – a UK MoD and Police Liaison – for his his insight and experiences in using AR and VR training.
Having served for approximately 25 years in the Armed Forces delivering training from initial recruit instruction through to specialist trade training across several high-profile military establishments, he has seen first-hand how technology can transform the way people learn.
“Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are powerful tools for instructors,” he explains.
“They allow trainees to rehearse complex procedures, understand systems visually, and build confidence in a controlled environment before stepping into real-world scenarios.
“Used properly, these technologies do not replace good instruction. They enhance it to make training more accessible, repeatable and ultimately more effective.”
What are some reasons military trainees can struggle to learn?
There are various reasons an individual may need extra support to access training, but common barriers include:
A mild learning difficulty
Learning difficulties have nothing to do with intelligence or capability. Some people simply need information presented to them in a particular way for it to be effective. A common example is dyslexia. If a trainee finds reading difficult, or cannot process information from reading, they’ll need specific support to make learning accessible and inclusive.
Neurodivergence
This is another example of an information processing challenge. “Some of the most capable trainees I’ve worked with have learned best through practical and visual instruction rather than long classroom sessions,” Dave told us. “Good training recognises people process information differently, and instructors need a range of tools to ensure every trainee can engage with the material and perform at their best.” Expecting someone with ADHD to keep still and listen for hours at a time is not going to result in quality training. We have to find another way to make the training work for the trainee.
English as an additional language
- VR (Virtual Reality) puts you in a fully digital world.
- AR (Augmented Reality) adds digital info to the real world, like a heads-up display.
- MR (Mixed Reality) lets you interact with both. Think digital and real elements working together.
Each can be used in training, depending on what you’re preparing for.
Previous poor experiences in education
If trainees had a difficult time in formal education, for whatever reason, being back in a rigid classroom environment can be very counterproductive. In high-stress situations trainees can fail to cement vital information to memory and can find instructions impossible to follow. Keeping these trainees calm, focused, and engaged is an ongoing task until they can associate the learning environment with positivity and success.
1: Augmented reality and virtual reality training is more visually engaging than traditional theory-based training
Regardless of the specific challenge the trainee faces, AR and VR training levels the playing field for everyone. The inclusion of hyper-realistic and interactive visuals naturally supports a diverse range of learners.
Instructors can communicate key information to the trainees in an engaging way. It’s automatically more engaging than listening to a speaker and retaining information or reading texts and interpreting meaning. The visual nature of AR and VR means learners literally see and “experience” the training material rather than imagining it or memorising it.
PWC conducted a study of the effectiveness of virtual learning and found, “VR-learners were 4 times more focused during training than their e-learning peers and 1.5 times more focused than their classroom colleagues”.
AR and VR are immersive learning experiences meaning trainees use all their senses to access content materials. Trainees simply being supported with visual clues for learning rather than only written or verbal instructions makes learning more inclusive and effective. PWC reported trainees using VR completed training faster than their colleagues who didn’t use it, and they were more confident in their knowledge.
It’s not just about identifying where trainees may struggle,” explained Dave.
“It’s about finding practical ways to ensure everyone can access and absorb the learning. In my experience the most effective approach is blended training combining classroom instruction, practical activity and technologies such as AR and VR.
“As instructors we also need to monitor engagement and performance throughout the training so we can adjust our approach and make sure the material is actually being understood and retained.”

2: AR and VR training is more active than traditional theory-based training and trainees retain more knowledge
Understanding the theory and foundations of a concept is essential for a trainee to fully grasp the practical functions. But, the longer trainees stay in the “theory” stage, the more difficult they may find it to concentrate, follow the content, or retain the knowledge.
AR and VR makes the theory parts of training more engaging. With interactive 3D renderings of equipment and processes VR and AR training supports trainees to move from the theory stage to the practical stage more quickly.
The sooner trainees can start applying their new knowledge practically, the better they’ll learn. With AR and VR, trainees can use headsets, glasses, and smart devices to support them as they perform tasks. Learning in this way means trainees are immediately building muscle memory and rehearsing essential knowledge.
Depending on the topic or the process, trainees can use AR/ VR as an intermediary support before being fully autonomous. Having additional instructions in your eyeline as they experience a training session means trainees are supported to do their best. Soon, with repetition, there will be no need for extra instructions because they’ll have developed the skills and instincts they need in their field
UKCPD, a leading UK professional training organisation, explains why practical knowledge is more beneficial for trainees:
Practical learning often allows us to retain information efficiently and for prolonged periods… [It] can generate a deeper understanding of a specific skill or subject. Learning from experience is often seen as a more powerful way to ingrain knowledge and develop abilities”.
3: Instructors can modify the challenge level of an AR or VR training session at the click of a button
The simplicity and adaptability of virtual training is what makes it most inclusive. If a trainee is finding a concept or a process difficult, the trainee has limitless options to support their learning:
- The trainee can easily access learning materials remotely to do extra learning on their own
- The instructor can amend what the trainee “sees” and how complex a task is, making it simpler at first and then building complexity when the trainee is ready
- The instructor can provide extra verbal instructions quietly, directly to the trainees’ headphones, until the trainee grows in confidence
- The trainee can work with peers to collaborate with learning and crowdsource solutions together
- The instructor can get precise data on trainees’ performance immediately, meaning they can reinstruct trainees and correct errors in the moment
- The instructor can set up tiny challenges, allowing the trainee to rehearse the elements they’re struggling with repeatedly, until the trainee has full capability
Likewise, the instructor can respond immediately to trainees who make swift progress and set them up on individual challenges to push their learning.
A study exploring using VR to support learners with autism from Science Direct concluded, “the data suggest that VR may support educational inclusion by allowing the personalisation of content and environments to accommodate individual student needs”.
“One of the biggest advantages of AR and VR is the flexibility it gives instructors when managing a mixed group of trainees.
“At any one time I might have one group consolidating their learning through a practical assessment, another repeating a task to improve their performance, and others progressing onto more advanced stages of the training.
“The technology allows trainees to work at the right pace for them while maintaining a consistent training standard. Repetition is essential in building competence, and these systems allow trainees to practise procedures multiple times in a controlled environment until the process becomes familiar and instinctive.
“As instructors we can monitor progress across the group, provide additional support where needed, and ensure every trainee builds the confidence required before moving on”

4: The immersive nature of AR and VR training means it’s easier to focus and not get distracted
Trainees who use AR and VR as they learn report feeling more focused and less distracted than in traditional training environments.
PWC reported, “VR-trained learners were up to 4 times more focused during training than their e-learning peers and 1.5 times more focused than their classroom peers”.
There are multiple reasons for this, including:
- The ability for trainees to quicky apply knowledge practically
- The increased visual support which is more engaging and makes learning material more explicit
- The opportunities for trainees to work autonomously and at their own pace
But perhaps the most significant reason trainees can focus more with AR and VR training is because it literally blocks out outside distractions. Physically wearing the glasses and headphones, or using a simulator, fully immerses the trainee in a hyper-realistic environment. The accurate-to-real-life digital renderings or overlays along with the sounds and realistic movements mean the “practice” feels exactly like real-life missions.
When tasks should be independent, trainees using glasses and headphones or headsets can’t hear or see their fellow trainees. They also can’t be distracted by any other auditory or visual interruptions from outside the training space. Trainees can focus more deeply and for longer on the course material. Instructors can cover more material and train more effectively.
When tasks need to be collaborative, AR and VR training is easily scalable to group learning. With clearly defined roles, interactive technology, and hyper-realistic visuals, trainees are supported to work together effectively. By working as a team, trainees practice communication skills, problem solving strategies, and begin to bond.
5: The pressure for trainees to “get it right” straight away is removed with AR and VR training

With the highly realistic, high quality digital environments trainees experience authentic training but with no risk to their health or wellbeing, and no risk to their teammates’ health or wellbeing. There’s no risk to equipment or limitations on accessing it. Trainees can learn, practice, make mistakes, and try again as many times as they need. Failing and improving are vital for building competency and resilience.
From the results of the PWC study, researchers concluded:
Practicing skills in VR offers the ability to try different paths to achieve better results. Learning something new involves being awkward, making mistakes, course-correcting and trying again. By giving people the opportunity to repeat a task in a natural way, practice builds confidence, which improves quality and helps to reduce mistakes.”

AR and VR training makes learning more inclusive for all trainees. It’s more engaging, makes knowledge more memorable, and reduces distractions. Regardless of the individual learning challenges trainees might face, everyone can benefit from virtual training.
